Fr. Edward D. Altstock

A woman filed a civil suit in 9/11 alleging that Altstock groomed, seduced and then sexually abused her on at least a dozen occasions when she was ages 14-18, beginning in 1985. He was assigned to St. John the Apostle in Reedsport during the time of the alleged abuse. Retired in 7/01. Archdiocese said this was the allegation against him. Settlement finalized in 7/12. As part of the settlement, the Vicar General was to issue a public apology on behalf of the Archbishop at the parish on 8/26/12. Died 12/2/17

In 12/03 a man filed suit alleging that Arata sexually molested him as a boy 1967-70 at Immaculate Conception Parish. Arata was assigned to Immaculate Conception 1969-75 and also worked at a local grade school and high school as a counselor 1964-75. He retired "for health reasons" in 1982 and died the same year.

Fr. Joseph A. Baccellieri

Placed on leave in 1992 after allegation of abuse in the 1970s involving teenage boys. Went to rehab, then reassigned to several parishes beginning in 1994. Supposedly reassigned on limited basis under close supervision. Retired in 2002. Removed from active ministry in 2002. Two men filed suits in 2004 alleging abuse as boys in the 1970s at Central Catholic High School. One plaintiff had a secretly recorded tape wherein Baccelliere seemed to admit molesting the plaintiffs and indicating that there were other victims. There were seven claims against Baccellieri by 4/07.

Fr. Arnold R. Beezer

Beezer was first named publicly as credibly accused in the Jesuit West Province 12/7/2018 list, which states that he was removed from ministry and put on a safety plan for abuse of a minor in the 1970s. In that decade Beezer worked at Jesuit HS in Portland, St Alexander's in Cornelius OR, and St Luke's in Woodburn OR in the Portland archdiocese. The list does not specify the Cornelius assignment or state where the abuse was reported. Beezer also worked in the Yakima and Spokane dioceses, and in the Tegucigalpa archdiocese, Honduras, in an orphanage and a maternity hospital. Residing in 2016-2020 at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA. Died in 2020.

Fr. Pius Brazauskas

Lithuanian. Arrived in U.S. 1940s. In 1949 assisted at a St. Louis parish, transferred in late 1950s to Eugene OR where he was hospital chaplain until early 1970s. Per news, a 1950s news story said Brazauskas had a special rapport with children, always had candy and bubblegum for them and was nicknamed "Dr. Bubblegum." Moved to North Bend OR 1972, worked at Holy Redeemer parish and St. Cathierine's Residence Nursing Home. Artist with religious paintings displayed around the world, per obit. Retired 1980. Died 1990. In 1/18, three men filed suit vs the archdiocese alleging Brazauskas sexually abused them as children in the 1980s, when the priest was assigned to Holy Redeemer parish in North Bend. The boys were between 5 and 12 years old when Brazauskas allegedly french kissed them, groped their genitals and pressed his erect penis against them. Five more men joined the suit, some alleging abuse, some up to age 16, in the 1970s; settlement of nearly $4M in 7/19.

Accused in a 1994 lawsuit of abuse in the early 1970's. The Archdiocese said he was on leave of absence when the abuse occurred, so they were not responsible for him. Lower court dismissed as not within scope of employment; OR Supreme Court reversed lower court in 1999. This ruling became noted for changing OR law. Case settled in 1/2001 for $512,500. Another man claimed abuse as a minor in 1965. Bucher admitted abuse in the 1960s and 1970s. Worked in CA and OR. Included on the Santa Barbara Province Franciscans' list 5/31/2019. On the Oakland diocese's list 6/1/2019. Died in 2019.

Also known as Vincent Cao Dang Minh or Vincent Dan Minh Cao. arrived in Portland OR from Vietnam in 1972 to pursue a master's degree. He soon began helping the Archdiocese with the Asian community and became very well known. In 3/2001 allegations were made that he had raped a woman in 1983 and molested two young girls in the 1980s. The Order sent him for treatment and later to Redemptorist residences in Chicago IL, then Oakland CA. His priestly functions were permanently removed. Said in 1/2023 to be living at a Redemptorist care facility for the elderly and infirm in MO. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report.

Monk of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon. Worked at some point in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Accused by at least 15 people, women and men, of sexually abusing them as children in the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Accused in a 2002 lawsuit of abuse of a 7-year-old girl nearly 30 years prior. Sued also by a man claiming Charvet masturbated in front of him and used sexually explicit language when the man was age 14 in 1958. By 2006 the archdiocese had settled 13 cases. Charvet was recalled to the Abbey when the first allegation surfaced in 2002. Died in 10/2007. One case was to go to trial 2010.

Second suit filed 12/10 against Mount Angel Abbey by an active priest who alleged that Clark molested him in 1970s at Mt. Angel Preparatory, when he was between the ages of 14 and 17.

Fr. Gerald Dezurick

Sued in 2005. Plaintiff alleged that Dezurick molested him in about 1960 at Tillamook Catholic High School when he was 16. Suit also alleged that Dezurick then lied to the boy's parents and persuaded them to commit him to a mental institution to cure homosexuality. Another man came forward to allege abuse in 1957. Total of four known accusers.Settlement with the Abbey in 2003. Dezurick died in 1986. Also worked in the Spokane diocese for several years in the late 1970s.

Fr. Donald A. Durand

A man filed suit in 2004 alleging that Durand molested him and three friends as boys in the early 1970s. The man said Durand fondled him, and forced all the boys to disrobe, take a sauna with him and wrestle with him. Incidents allegedly occurred at St. Francis Assisi School in Portland. More than a dozen men have alleged abuse 1960s-90s. Durand retired in 2001 at age 70. Privileges later removed. Eight claims were settled 3/14/07 after two "mini-trials. New suit filed in 9/11 by one man.

Accused in a 2002 lawsuit against the Portland archdiocese and Franciscans of abuse of a boy for two years, beginning when the boy was age 12 in 1961. Ford apparently moved back and forth between the Portland archdiocese and positions in CA. Died 10/21/1984. Suit settled in 2003 or 2004. He signed documents John E. Ford when chaplain at Napa State Hospital 1/1973 - 3/1977. Included on the Santa Rosa diocese's list 1/12/2019. It notes abuse in the diocese in 1974 and that he went on leave 1/1/1979. On Oakland diocese's list in 2019. On Santa Barbara Province Franciscans' list 5/31/2019. Accused in one or more lawsuits between 2019-2022.

Fr. Clement Frank

A man filed suit in 4/02 alleging that Frank raped him at age 7 in the basement of St. Mary's in Mount Angel in the 1950s. Frank was later principal of Mount Angel Seminary Prep School. He died in 1996 at age 89. In 3/08, the Oregon Court of Appeals upheld dismissal of suit against the Archdiocese. Litigation was still pending in 11/08.

Fr. Massimo Ghilardi

In 2/03 a man wrote from prison to a priest at a Bandon OR church to say that he had been molested by Ghilardi 1976-77, when he was approximately age 12. The priest he contacted notified the archdiocese and reported back that there were no other complaints in Ghilardi's file. Ghilardi requested a transfer from Bandon in 1977 "for health reasons" and died 4/16/85.

Seminarian Juan Jose Gonzalez Rios

From Jalisco, Mexico. Seminary student at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon until he was dismissed in 2003. Warrant was issued in 2005 for his arrest on felony charges of encouraging child sex abuse (child pornography). When arrested in 3/2008, he was working at St. Peter Retreat Center in the Yakima diocese. The Yakima bishop knew of the earlier allegation; thought it was an isolated incident and duties did not involve children. Gonzalez claimed he was abused by a priest before entering seminary. Criminal charges dropped in 5/2009.

Fr. John Maloy Goodrich

A man alleged in a 1989 civil suit that Goodrich fondled, kissed and bit him on church premises between 1974 and 1988. Settled in 1990 for $446K. Goodrich retired in 1988 and later suffered a stroke that left him mentally incapacitated. He died in 1995. At least one additional suit was filed in 10/04. There are as many as 14 accusers against Goodrich.

Reportedly in 10/2024, parishioners were informed via email on 6/27/2024 that Gracias was returning to India to face allegations of sexual misconduct with children.


Fr. Maurice R. Grammond

Accused in 12/14/99 suit of sexually abusing a boy in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Amended suit added 24 other plaintiffs; settlement with 23 announced 10/9/00. Alcohol and porn used in grooming; abuse allegedly included oral and anal sex. Archdiocese was warned 5 times 1959-74. Removed 1985; sick leave 1986; retired 1988; died 2002. there were 54 claims by 4/07. Another suit filed 2008; dismissed on SOL. Through 2013, more than 46 claims had been settled for almost $40M. New suits filed 6/13 and 10/13 and 4/14. In 2005 one accuser was sentenced to 3 years in prison for making false allegation in a civil suit filed against Grammond. Another new suit filed 6/24/14 alleged abuse 1969-72 when plaintiff was ages 6-9. Another suit filed by 2 brothers in 2/17 claimed abuse by Grammond and Rev. James M. Harris ages 9-13 and 11-12, while their step-father suffered from leukemia.

Visiting priest from the Diocese of Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca, Mexico. Began working in Portland in 1993. Accused in 5/1997 of molesting several pre-teen and teenage girls. Despite knowing of the allegations, the Archdiocese wrote to the Immigration Service asking that he be granted permanent residence status. Guzman-Chavez was restricted from contact with women but was allowed to continue his Spanish-language ministry.

Br. Lawrence M. Halsey

Harris who is alleged to also have abused the children. Died in 1999. There were 7 claims against Harris by 4/07. New lawsuit to be filed 8/07 alleging abuse of 1 youth in the early 1950s. Another suit filed by 2 brothers in 2/17 claiming abuse by Harris and Rev. Maurice Grammond when they were ages 9-13 and 11-12, while their step-father suffered from leukemia.

Fr. David Hazen

One suit settled in 1997 for a small sum. Another 18 individuals participated in a suit filed in 12/01 which alleged abuse by Hazen in the late 1950s and late 1970s. Baker Bishop allowed Hazen to serve in multiple parishes, including some in the Portland archdiocese, even after Hazen admitted to abuse in 1959. This permitted him to abuse at least 16 of the plaintiffs. All 18 settled with the Baker diocese in 4/04 for $3.6M. Hazen died in 1983.

Fr. Thomas B. Laughlin

Accused of sexually abusing 20-40 boys during 1967-96. Numerous civil suits filed; several settled. Convicted at least once. Sentenced to 1 year in jail in 1983. Abused on way to treatment in New Mexico. Laicized in 1988. Ten men each sued Laughlin in 2004. Additional suit filed in 8/07 by a man alleging abuse beginning in 1960. Laughlin died 3/1/13 in Omaha. Another claim filed in 2007, of abuse in 1979; this person was later convicted of filing at least 4 false claims in Portland, Spokane, Covington and Tucson and was sentenced 6/11/14 to 33 months in prison.

Fr. Archibald M. McDowell

Taught at University of Portland 1949-1959. Accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy in 1956. In 1958 the Provincial of the order wrote to McDowell noting two canonical warnings already on his record, one of which was for fondling two high school boys. Sued prior to 7/2002 by a boy he allegedly molested in 1956. Archdiocese paid $10K in 2003 to settle one claim. Also taught in Austin, TX. On the order's list 6/12/2019. It notes multiple allegations received in 1949-1950s of abuse occurring in OR, IN, and LA. Permanently removed from ministry in 1962. Died in 1994. On New Orleans' list in 6/2019.

Fr. J. William McLeod

Civil suit filed in 2001, settled in 2002. Plaintiff said McLeod molested him 50 times 1938-41. Another man claimed abuse but did not sue; he did provide a deposition in the existing legal case. A second civil suit in 6/02 alleged that the plaintiff was abused as a child at St. Mary's School in Medford more than a dozen times 1954-57. The senior pastor allegedly walked in during one episode of abuse but failed to take action. At least 14 accusers in all. McLeod died in 1969.

The 'relationship' continued beyond her 18th birthday in 1965, until 1969. She filed suit in federal court. Michele retired in 2004. The Paulists announced in 11/2018 that it had received a "credible and substantiated allegation" of abuse of a minor female, occurring when he was assigned to St. Philip Neri parish in Portland 1964-1968, and 1972-1973. The Order said, too, that there was a previous allegation, in 2002, of sexual misconduct with another minor female, found at the time to be inconclusive. Michele, age 90 in 11/2018, was living in a skilled nursing facility and prohibited from ministering as a priest. Name included on the Mobile archdiocese's list 12/6/2018. Accused in a 1/22 lawsuit of sexually abusing an altar boy, beginning when the boy was 13, over several years in the early 1980s at Santa Teresita in Mangilao, Guam. The abuse allegedly occurred during sleepovers in the parish rectory and included physical assaults and plying the boy with alcohol. The plaintiff also alleged abuse by Fr. Andrew Mannetta, later at the same parish.

Girl fled and was able to describe the man and provide police his car license number. He denied the allegations. Arrested at Los Angeles airport 4/8/14 upon return from a visit to Australia. Archdiocese removed him from duties when he was arrested. Pled guilty 5/6/16 to attempted luring. Sentenced to 1 year in jail; given credit for 23 days served and 244 days were suspended. Was to serve remaining time in a work-release program.

Charged with first degree sex abuse, using child in display of sexually explicit conduct and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Removed without privileges from St. Luke's in Woodburn after arrest. (Perez' best friend in seminary was Uriel Ojeda, convicted in 7/2013 of molesting a girl.) Perez pleaded guilty 4/1/2013. Sentenced to 75 months in prison. Civil suit filed in 4/2014. Archdiocese settled in 12/2015.

Br. Robert Ryan

Died in 4/17. Accused in a lawsuit filed in 10/27/20 of sexually abusing a boy 1975-77. The boy was a student at Marist High in Eugene OR and Ryan was a vice-principal. His accuser said Ryan also abused other students. Transferred around 1978, per another suit, to Marist High in Chicago IL. This suit was filed in 3/21 by a man alleging abuse as a student in the early 1980s at St. Mary's College Prep in Manhasset, NY, where Ryan was assigned around 1979. The abuse allegedly began when the man was age 13, went on for two years, and included sodomy and plying the boy with drugs and alcohol. Numerous other students were also allegedly abused. Abuse is said to have included sadomasochism. Per the plaintiff, he told the order in the early 1990s, yet Ryan was allowed to continue to work at Camp Marist in NH. The plaintiff received settlements from the school in 1993 and in 2006. The suit seeks to void the earlier settlements, and claims fraud.

In 1/93 a woman came forward to archdiocesan officials, alleging abuse by Senko 1965-69, when she was a North Catholic High School student and he was a teacher, then principal. She said she spoke with a few priests about it at the time, but the abuse continued. He resigned as pastor of St. Peter's in Portland in 3/93 and was sent for treatment. He denied touching the girl "consciously or unconsciously." He did admit to relationships with adult women. Returned to ministry. Administrator 1994-98 of St. Andrew in Cornelius. Retired in 1998. Removed from public ministry in 5/02. Died in 12/04. Documents from file released 11/08.

Sister Mary Luke

Accused, along with an unnamed priest, of molesting a 10-year-old boy in 1958 at St. Mary's Home for Boys, an orphanage and care facility. Luke denied the allegations, saying that at the time of the alleged abuse she did not work in the building where the abuse was said to have occurred. In 2006 the plaintiff was to file suit in federal court. Luke was retired but not on restrictions - her order did not believe the allegations.

A man filed civil suit in 2003 alleging abuse by Smith in the mid-1980s, at Holy Redeemer Church in Portland. The abuse allegedly occurred on multiple occasions, and included sodomy, oral sex and fondling. At the time the suit was filed, Smith was working as chaplain at Newman House at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. He was immediately placed on leave. He had been in Stockton for two years. Smith's personnel file shows that in 4/86, he admitted to his superiors that he had "problems" with young boys, had solicited two minors the previous summer and was strongly attracted to a 14-year-old boy. Treatment was recommended and he was sent to his Order in San Francisco, who relayed that they knew of Smith's problems. Added to Stockton diocese's list 11/12/20.

Fr. Michael Sprauer

Accused of abusing as many as 20 teenage boys at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility 1972-75. Sued in 2002 and 2003. Sprauer denied the charges. Archdiocese settled with 15 plaintiffs for total of $600K. Suit(s) going to trial in 5/07 against Sprauer and the State of Oregon. Found guilty of abuse of two of three plaintiffs 5/17/07; jury awarded $1.4M in damages. In 7/07 the state agreed to pay $1,050,000 to 14 plaintiffs. Ethics complaint were filed against plaintiff's attorney in 2012 over his handling of cases; his license was suspended in 8/14 for 90 days.

After that disclosure, St. Arnaud was transferred to another parish where he allegedly abused the other two plaintiffs. These men filed suits in 11/02. Also history of abuse in Canada before transfer to Portland. Another suit filed in 2005. St Arnaud died 9/22/92 (spelled St. Arnoud the 1993 Directory.)

A man sued the archdiocese in 2002 alleging that he had been abused by Steigerwald in 1978 on a long trip. The suit alleges the archdiocese knew prior to the abuse that Steigerwald was a danger to teenage boys and failed to notify parishioners. Plaintiff's attorney said Steigerwald left the church "under less than honorable circumstances" in 1981. Per diocese spokesman, he just took a leave of absence. Steigerwald died in 1992 after being struck by a car. Archdiocese paid $450K in 2003 to settle the suit.

Fr. John R. Thatcher

Had been superintendent of Catholic schools in the archdiocese, principal of Central Catholic and an ecclesiastical court judge. The archdiocese paid more than $1.8M in 2003 to settle three cases.

Taught high school in OR and in Los Angeles CA. Former pastor and prior of Holy Rosary parish in Portland OR. Accused in a 2/16 lawsuit of the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old altar boy in 1987. Plaintiff said he told other priests who told him he must obey Vogt. Vogt denied the abuse. The plaintiff dropped the suit in 5/17 after his brothers testified that they were altar boys with him, and that there was no abuse. Per the Domincans' list in 10/21, Vogt was falsely accused. He was returned to ministry in late 5/17.

Fr. Cosmas White

Prior to 7/02, a man filed suit alleging that White abused him during the 1964-65 school year at Mount Angel Seminary Prep School. White "retired" without privileges after the suit was filed. Suit settled "for a nominal amount of money" two months after it was filed. Per news in 9/04, the order cleared White of the molestation charges and he was to be allowed to resume public ministry. Review board found no evidence to support the allegation. Died 4/27/17.
