Bankruptcy Protection in the Abuse Crisis

So far, 40 U.S. Catholic dioceses and religious orders have filed for bankruptcy protection: 37 dioceses and 3 religious orders (the Oregon Province of the Jesuits and the Congregation of the Christian Brothers, and the Crosier Fathers and Brothers). The Archdiocese of San Juan (Puerto Rico) is not included in this tally, because that Chapter 11 filing (10/29/18) was prompted by a pension dispute.

On this page we assemble basic information and documents on each of these bankruptcy filings, as well as general information on the process and the issues involved.
