Fr. George D. Gillen

Named in a case settled in 8/2008 as having sexually abused a boy who had been sent to him for counseling, beginning when the boy was age 12 in about 1988, and continuing into the boy's adulthood. As pastor of St. Joseph the Carpenter in Roselle, Gillen hired his alleged victim to lead youth activities. The alleged victim, John Schulte, was arrested in 11/2002 and convicted for the sexual assault of three boys in the parish. Gillen remained in active ministry.

Fr. James Kemp Gardiner

In 1997 the Diocese received a report that Gardiner had engaged in unwanted sexual touching with a man who had reached out to him while feeling suicidal. Gardiner admitted to the incident, which occurred in 12/1996. In 2015 a man reported sexual assault by Gardiner and Fr. Ronald Gronowoski numerous times when he was age 17 in the early 1980s. The alleged victim said that the priests paid him to keep quiet. The Diocese deemed the allegations against Gardiner not credible. In 2019 the man said that Gardiner was a life-long friend and that nothing sexual happened between them. Ministry restricted in 1/2024 after Bishop Walsh met with the Diocesan Review Board. Gardiner died 2/1/2025.
Fr. Juan Carlos Garcia Mendoza

Assigned to St. Philip's in Franklin in 11/2023 when placed on leave pending the investigation of a report that he had improperly touched a teenage boy. Indicted in 2/2024. Indicted on two new charges of sexual battery on 6/5/2024.
Fr. Matthew L. Gaskin

Gaskin's name is included in 10/2021 on the Franciscans' Holy Name Province's list of those with substantiated allegations against them of child sexual abuse. No details provided as to when or where the abuse occurred. He died in 2010. (Placing him for now in the New York archdiocese, where the Province is based.)

Rev. Edward M. Gallagher
Gallagher was a prison chaplain and parish priest in PA early in his priesthood. Per the Official Catholic Directory, Edward M. Gallagher was a Philadelphia priest on leave of absence at least 1930-1948. By 1949 he was indexed as a Sante Fe priest assigned to a Trappist Monastery in Dubuque IA, and in 1952 he was shown as at St. Francis Home in Dubuque. He worked in the Santa Fe archdiocese from 1953 until his death in 1969. Chaplain for 15 years at St. Anthony's Boys Home in Albuquerque. Accused in a lawsuit filed in 8/2020 of sexually abusing a boy who resided at the Home. The plaintiff, in his late 60s, said that he and other boys were sexually abused by the chaplain, visiting priests and Sisters of St. Francis, who ran the Home. He said he was abused from the age of 6 until he escaped at age 13, and that he was Gallagher's "captive sex toy." Gallagher's name is included on the Archdiocese of Santa Fe's list of accused in 10/2020. (The list shows him as an OFM Franciscan, but other sources do not show that he was a member of the Order.)

Per the 2/10/2011 Grand Jury Report II, a man told the archdiocese in 2007 that Gallagher repeatedly fondled him when he was a 7- or 8-year-old altar boy at St. Mark's in Bristol, PA. Another man had made a similar allegation the previous year. The man who came forward in 2007 reported that others had also been abused. The Review Board deemed both reports unsubstantiated in 2008. The man who came forward in 2007 died by suicide within a year of the Review Board's decision. Gallagher "retired." He was removed in 2/2011. New suits in 4/2011 and 9/2012. Found unfit for ministry in 4/2013. Permanently removed. Died 6/5/1208. Funeral mass concelebrated by Bishop Maginnis.

in In a civil suit filed 10/2003, 27 victims alleged sexual abuse by 24 priests, including Gallo. One plaintiff said Gallo abused him around 1966. Gallo denied it. Gallo was the only priest of the 24 who had an active parish assignment at the time. In 3/2004, the Diocese announced that the review board found the allegations against Gallo unsubstantiated, and he was allowed to continue in ministry. Per the Diocese's list in 2/2019, Gallo was permanently removed from ministry 6/26/2018. He was accused in a claim settled in 2021 in the mid-six figures of sexually abusing a boy, ages 9-10, 1983-1985, while assigned to Blessed Sacrament in Brooklyn. Died 6/6/2023.

In 11/2022 a 34-year-old man claimed in a lawsuit that Garcia sexually abused him over two years, beginning when he was an 8-year-old altar boy in the late 1990s. Garcia was assigned at the time in question to Immaculate Heart of Mary in Brentwood. The abuse allegedly included rape. Garcia retired from the parish in 2001, after 17 years. He died in 2003. He was accused in a 12/2022 suit of raping a boy, age 12, in the late 1960s, and of telling the boy he would die if he told. Another lawsuit the same month alleged abuse by Garcia of a boy in 1974. Worked for a year in Miami; moved to Cuba; expelled in 1969 for "serious difficulties of a moral nature (homosexuality)." Miami took him back. Accused in 1988 of sexually abusing four Nicaraguan and Salvadoran refugee boys 1983-1988. Evaluated at St. Luke's Institute in 1988; sent on sabbatical to Colombia; assigned in Honduras. The priest who replaced him at his parish told a news outlet that Garcia-Rubio was sent on sabbatical because he had just celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest. The Miami Archdiocese removed Garcia-Rubio's faculties in 1989. He was reportedly working at a hotel in the Dominican Republic in the early 1990s and defrocked in 1999. Per the FL Attorney General's report 11/6/2020, Garcia-Rubio was known to befriend and offer help to teenage boys, mostly immigrants, withholding help if they would not provide him with sexual favors. A fifth man sued in 2004, alleging rape in 1984 when he was a refugee, age 13. Some claims settled in 9/2004. New documents revealed in 3/2010. New suits filed in 6/2010 and 2/2013. At least 11 known victims. Deceased.

Br. Michael Geilenfeld

Brother of the Missionaries of Charity, entering in 1974. From Iowa. Worked as a brother in Los Angeles, Cambodia, El Salvador and India before settling in Haiti. Left the order and founded St. Joseph's orphanage for boys in Port-au-Prince in 1985. The boys were destitute, living in the streets. Geilenfeld would take boys across the U.S. and in England for fundraising tours, in which the boys performed as a dance troupe. Allegations first surfaced publicly in 12/1995 when 8 boys on tour in Detroit told authorities that Geilenfeld sexually and physically abused them at the orphanage. A judge ordered them to return to Haiti with Geilenfeld, saying he had no jurisdiction. The boys' attorney said there were allegations as early as 1987, and that boys also complained while touring England. In 2011 Haiti journalist Cyrus Sibert broke the story of allegations against Geilenfeld after a missionary contacted him. Survivor advocate Paul Kendrick, from ME, got involved; he and Sibert worked together for years to demand Geilenfeld's arrest. Dozens of boys and young men came forward. Geilenfeld was arrested in 2014 in Port-Au-Prince and spent a year in jail. The case was dismissed after 5 alleged victims did not show up for a hearing. Geilenfeld and a charity funding him, Hearts with Haiti, sued Kendrick for defamation. A jury decided for Geilenfeld, dismissed on appeal. Settled in 2019, $3M for the charity, nothing for Geilenfeld. Arrested in the Dominican Republic in 4/2019, to where he allegedly had fled from Haiti to avoid arrest there. He had also opened a home for boys in the Dominican Republic. Arrested in Denver CO 1/22/2024, charged with traveling from Miami FL to Haiti to have sex with children between 11/2006 and 12/2010. His victims were boys, ages 9-13. Pleaded not guilty in Miami federal court 2/16/2024. Ordered to be held in federal prison while awaiting trial. Found guilty in 5/2025. To be sentenced 2/5/2025.

In 1997 the Baltimore archdiocese received an allegation that Gerg sexually abused a minor in the late 1960s to early 1970s, while assigned to St. Benedict's in Baltimore. Removed from active ministry in 2002, after the U.S. Bishops' Dallas Charter. Included on Baltimore's list of accused priests in 9/2002. Included in 8/2018 on the St. Vincent Archabbey of Latrobe PA Benedictines' list of credibly accused. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. It shows that Gerg's victim was a girl, and the abuse took place 1967-1972, when the girl was ages 13-17. Fr. Robert R. Gerl

In 2020 a man reported to the Diocese that Gerl sexually abused him at age 14 in 1985 at St. Gerard Parish in Lansing MI. The alleged victim said that, with his mother's permission, he spent a night in the rectory, having been invited by Gerl. He said that Gerl gave him something to drink after which he felt paralyzed. He remembered, among other things, being naked in the bathtub with Gerl and another man, and waking up the next morning naked. He said Gerl told him not to tell his mother. Gerl had been arrested in 1977 for solicitation in a public park; he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. He was a seminarian in Milwaukee at the time. When the Milwaukee archdiocese refused his ordination, he was accepted into the Diocese of Lansing, where he was ordained in 1979. Gerl was again arrested, in 1985, for solicitation at a highway rest stop. He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct. Placed on leave, sent to the House of Affirmation in Whitinsville MA for treatment. He was released to the Diocese of Kalamazoo, assigned as chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Nazareth MI and was allowed a position at Nazareth College. When the college closed in 1991 he transferred to St. Catharine College in St. Catharine KY, Archdiocese of Louisville. Gerl was investigated in 1995 for sexual harrassment and intimidation at St. Catharine's. He resigned with the agreement that the College would drop its investigation. In 1997 Gerl was assigned to St. Thomas More Student Parish in the Kalamazoo diocese and worked part-time at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. There were indications that Gerl abused students at St. Thomas More, an accuser saying in 2002 "He used lies, and false information to manipulate and abuse.... ." "He is a very sick man with sadistic fetishes." Gerl retired in 2016. His faculties in the Lansing diocese were removed in 10/2018 due to a credible allegation of sexual assault of an adult male decades prior. He had been a member of the Diocesan Tribunal since 2014.

Fr. David A. Ghiorso

In a 10/20/2021 letter to his parishioners, the Archdiocese announced that Ghiorso had been accused in a civil claim of the sexual abuse of a minor 30-40 years previously. Placed on leave pending investigation. Returned to ministry in 12/2021. Three suits reportedly were filed by 6/23/2022. One claims Ghiorso plied an altar boy with wine and raped him at St. Vincents School for Boys for a year beginning in 1989. Another suit, filed in 4/2022, claims Ghiorso raped a boy multiple times at St. Vincents 1988-1991, beginning when the boy was age 10. One accuser said he reported the abuse at the time to the school and was then placed in a foster home. Ghiorso's attorney denied the allegations.

In 2002 a woman reported to the Diocese that, beginning on the day of her First Communion in the late 1960s when she was about age 8, and repeatedly until she was 12, Gill sexually abused her. Gill was the "family priest," assigned to St. Charles in Pittsfield. She alleged that the abuse involved groping and fondling and would take place at family gatherings such as picnics, trips to the beach and sleepovers. She received a settlement from the Diocese in 2008. The Diocese told her that another woman had come forward in 1992 claiming that she was abused by Gill at age 15. Gill died in 1995. Reportedly in 8/2021, a parishioner confronted Gill in 1977 after a 14-year-old girl told him that Gill was molesting her in his rectory bedroom at St. Charles. The parishioner informed the senior priest at the parish. Gill was soon transferred to a parish in Brimfield. In 8/2021 the Diocese stated that it had received three complaints of child sexual abuse by Gill. Name added to the Diocese's list in 8/2022. It notes one credible allegation, of abuse 1967-1971.

Arrested and charged in 1/1986 with two counts of sexual contact for abuse in 12/1986 of a 15-year-old boy and abuse in 12/1987 of a 17-year-old boy. Both incidents allegedly occurred at St. Isidore's rectory in Vineland NJ, where Gillespie was assigned. He was also a religion teacher at Sacred Heart High School. Allowed to enter a pre-trial rehabilitation program which would lead to the dropping of the charges. Gillespie was pastor at the time in question of Our Lady of the Assumption in Charlotte and the boy was a student at the parish school. He filed suit 11/18/21. Gillespie left the Charlotte diocese in 2002 for the Diocese of Raleigh until 2008, then to the Diocese of Charleston, SC, returning in 1/21 to Raleigh. In 1991 a parishioner reported that teenagers - including one of Girard's two foster sons - were allowed to drink whiskey in the rectory, and there were reports that year of Girard's "increasingly erratic and problematic behavior." Received one year probation in 2002 after falsely telling police he was the victim of a car jacking - he had picked up a male prostitute and the man stole his car. The man said they smoked crack cocaine and drank alcohol in St. Clement's rectory. Girard was sent to St. Luke Institute. In 4/2004 a young man alleged abuse, including rape, by Girard when he was a St. Clement third-grader in the early 1990s, the first time during confession. He said Girard threatened him with castration if he told. Police were notified; the Archdiocese investigated. Girard denied the allegation. The accuser by suicide in 2005; his parents sued in 12/2007, later receiving a $200K settlement. Girard died in 2018. His name was included on the Archdiocese's list 7/23/2019. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report.

In 2008 a man alleged that he was molested as a boy 1978-1982 by Zumaya and Revs. Louis White and Larry Hernandez. The priests were assigned at the time to San Fernando Cathedral. Zumaya may also have abused the boy while assigned to Carrizo Springs. The Archdiocese admitted that there had been previous allegations of an undefined nature in the past which had been "handled" at the time. Two more accusers later came forward. Zumaya left ministry in 1998 without faculties and retired to his native Guadalajara, Mexico, where he was allowed to minister. Name included on the Archdiocese of San Antonio list 1/31/2019. It notes 9 allegations, the first one received in 1997, leading to his removal. Gonzalez Zumaya died in 2013.

Goodman admitted when confronted by the diocese in 1994 to sexually abusing a teenage boy at St. John Vianney Prep Seminary and at a parish in 1976-79. He was sent to St. John Vianney Hospital in PA for treatment. His victim came forward again in 2002 and demanded the story be made public. Goodman was forced to retire without privileges 8/02. Other alleged perpetrators at the school were Steven Rule and John Leonard. In 3/19 a man stated publicly that he told the diocese in 2016 that Goodman abused him 1966-67 as a teenage altar boy at Holy Cross parish in Lynchburg. The Review Board reportedly deemed the allegation credible and sent the case to the Vatican, which declined to laicize Goodman. Police began an investigation, then dropped it due to the priest's "mental condition." On diocese's list 2/13/19. Died in 2021.

Fr. William C. Graham

[Note: Please click on William C. Graham's name above to view all the sources for this entry. If you are viewing this entry in our Duluth sort or by searching for priests named "Graham", you are viewing an abbreviated list of sources.]
Pastor of St. Michael's church in Duluth MN when placed on leave 5/23/2016 after he was accused in a lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy, age 15-16, in 1977-1978. The boy was a student at Cathedral High School, where Graham worked variously as principal, chaplain, religious studies department head, and teacher. Per the suit, the accuser's father had notified the Duluth diocese of the alleged abuse in 2010. Graham denied the allegation and filed suit in 7/2016 against his accuser. The Diocese of Duluth announced in 8/2018 that the allegations against Graham were credible. Jury trial for Graham's suit against his accuser 8/21/2018. The jury found that the accuser interfered with Graham's contractual duties when he filed his claim in 5/2016 but did not intentionally inflict distress on him. The accuser was ordered to pay Graham $13,500 in damages. On 8/26/19, the Minnesota Court of Appeals affirmed. Graham was added to the Diocese of Duluth's list of credibly accused 11/26/19. Added to the Diocese of Joliet's list 12/13/19 as "permanently removed"; Joliet listed him as working 2000-2005 at Lewis University in Romeoville in the Joliet diocese. In 2021, the Diocese of Duluth reportedly received an affidavit by a second man alleging abuse by Graham as a child. Graham was included on the Chicago archdiocese's list of credibly accused 10/14/22. In the 2004 Official Catholic Directory, Graham had been listed by the Duluth diocese as on duty outside the diocese, with an address of 5119 N. Kenmore St. in Chicago, but with no ministry in Chicago specified. Included in the 5/23/23 IL Attorney General's Report.
In 3/2024 the Vatican's Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith found the evidence against Graham insufficient. The Diocese of Duluth removed his name from its list of accused 3/28/24. The Diocese of Joliet removed his name from its list of accused on 5/9/24. Graham was returned to St. Michael church in Duluth 5/17/2024. Retired 6/30/2024. The Archdiocese of Chicago removed his name from its list 9/20/24. In late 2024, the IL Attorney General updated the online version of his Report to reflect: the Vatican decision to reinstate Graham; the resulting removal of his name from the Duluth, Joliet, and Chicago lists; his return to ministry; and his retirement. The IL AG chose not to remove Graham from its Report "because the standard used by the Vatican ('there does not exist moral certitude of his culpability') is inconsistent with the standards used by the dioceses when substantiating the claim against Graham ('credible,' 'reasonable to suspect,' 'more likely than not')."
The assignment history for Graham, included by the Duluth diocese in its 11/26/19 list of accused, is supplemented by the diocese's announcement of Graham's retirement, which states that he "served for over a decade as Professor and Director of the Catholic Studies Program in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, from 2004-2013." The Official Catholic Directory does not index him in those years, except in 2012 and 2013, when he is indexed and listed as an instructor at St. Scholastica. In addition to the 2000-2005 visiting professorship at Lewis University, noted in the Joliet diocese 12/13/19 list, columns by Graham in the Duluth News Tribune identify him as a visiting professor in 2014 at St. John's University in Collegeville MN in the St. Cloud diocese, after he had been a scholar in residence there. The Official Catholic Directories for the late 1990s locate Graham in residence at Manhattan's All Saints church in the New York archdiocese. In 1997, an article in the Star-Ledger identifies him as associate professor of religious studies and director of the Caldwell Pastoral Ministry Institute, established in 1996 at Caldwell College in the Newark archdiocese.

Pastor of two parishes when the Diocese announced 6/2/2018 that Guidry was accused of the sexual abuse of a minor. The abuse occurred "several years" prior at St. Peter's in Morrow. The victim was the son of a church deacon who served at the parish. Guidry was placed on leave. Guidry turned himself in to the Sheriff's Office 6/13/2018 and confessed to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy, after plying him with alcohol. The victim filed suit in 8/2018. Guidry pleaded guilty in 3/2019. Ordered to register as a sex offender. Included on the Diocese's list in 4/2019. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, three years suspended. Released on bail under house arrest in 4/2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sent back to prison after sentencing appeals were denied. The Diocese issued an apology 5/7/2021; the victim's family said they had settled the same week. Guidry was permanently removed from ministry. In early 2021 Guidry testified that after he molested the boy in 2015, he told fellow priests in a support group. He wasn't removed until the boy came forward in 2018. Denied early release by the state parole board 8/17/2021. In 12/2023 the victim's father resigned from the diocese's diaconate and the Catholic Church and joined an Anglican congregation because of "distressing revelations regarding sexual abuse scandals... ." Bishop Deshotel informed the former deacon in 3/2024 that he had been excommunicated.

A woman told the diocese in 11/2017 that Gyan sexually abused her in 1996, when she was age 10 and he was pastor of St. John the Baptist in Brusly. She said the abuse occurred during confession. Gyan "categorically denied the allegation." The diocese said it reported the allegation to civil authorities and initiated its own investigation. Gyan was kept in ministry pending the investigation's outcome. The woman also claimed sexual abuse by a priest in a diocese in another state, which reportedly was being investigated there. In 2/2018 the diocese announced that it had determined that the allegation could not be substantiated.
