Chaplain Found Guilty of Sex Acts

February 17, 1983

A Roman Catholic priest has been convicted of raping and sexually abusing young retarded patients at a state hospital where he worked as a chaplain.

A Tulare County Superior Court jury deliberated more than 12 hours before returning guilty verdicts Wednesday against the Rev. Louis Aloysius Garcia.

He was convicted of rape, two counts of sodomy, oral copulation, attempted sodomy and two counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child at the Porterville State Hospital in central California.

His attorney, J. Patrick Sullivan, accused the victims of lying.

Prosecutor Martin Malone acknowledged that retarded patients occasionally lie to get what they want, but he said the youngsters told the same basic story.

Garcia initially was charged with 19 sex charges involving six male and two female patients. He worked at the hosptal from May 1979 to August 1980.

Some counts were dismissed on appeal over a search of Garcia's office and seizure of his calendar.

Judge Jay Ballantyne set sentencing for March 16.
