Burke announced today that Pope Benedict XVI had approved the laicization, or defrocking of four St. Louis archiocesan priests. James A. Funke, James L. Gummersbach, Bryan M. Kuchar and Michael L. Seidel were "permanently dismissed from the clerical state" by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, according to an archdiocesan statement. The archdiocese had suspended all four men after it determined that each had been credibly accused "of sexual abuse of a minor." All four had been forbidden to function or represent themselves as priests.
