Named publicly by the Baltimore archdiocese on its list 4/24/2019. The Diocese of Harrisburg told Baltimore in 2018 of a claim of sex abuse against Bechtel, occurring while assigned to Mt. St. Joseph High School. Bechtel worked at the school 1979-1989. More allegations of abuse while at Mt. St. Joseph followed. Bechtel died in 1994. Included in the MD Attorney General's Report 4/5/2023, which shows two separate reports in 1986 by teen boys (both former St. Joseph's students) to their counselors of 'solicitation by Bechtel. No action. The 2018 reports were from a mother who said her two boys were abused by Bechtel while Mt. Fr. Maurice J. Blackwell
Pastor of St. Edward's in Baltimore 1979-2003. Placed on leave in 1993 after complaints of abuse of a minor 1989-1992. Law enforcement investigated; closed case despite evidence of abuse; discovered several teenage boys had lived at Blackwell's rectory over the years. Sent to treatment then reinstated. Permanently placed on leave in 1998 after admitting to a "sexual relationship" with another minor which ended in the 1970s. Settlement for $90K with this victim. The 1993 accuser shot and injured Blackwell in 2002. Archbishop acknowledged abuse. In 2002 multiple others alleged sexual abuse by Blackwell 1960s-1970s. Included on the archdiocese's list of accused. Laicization announced in 12/2004. Found guilty during a 2/2005 criminal trial for the 1993 abuse, which included rape. Settlement for $70K with this victim in 2008. Also in 2008, $35K and $75K settlements with two more victims. Three more men came forward, in 2/2017, 5/2018 and 4/2020, reporting abuse ages 13-17, at age 8 or 9, and in third grade. Blackwell's case is included in the MD Attorney General's 4/5/2023 report.

Named publicly as accused in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. Sued in 1978 for an affair with a neighbor's wife. Went on leave of absence, never returned to ministry. Married. Report in 1988 to the Archdiocese that Callahan sexually abused a boy, ages 11-18, from 1967-1974. The abuse was said to have included rape and involved alcohol. It occurred in many places, including during overnights at the rectories of St. Rita's in Baltimore and Christ the King in Edgemere. The alleged victim said he was sure others knew about it. A priest assigned to St. Rita's with Callahan 1970-1972 said "Callahan was close to many young people, including the victim and his family" and that he knew Callahan "had kids in his room." Callahan was laicized in 2017. He died 11/22/2019.

Fr. Fernando Cristancho
From the Diocese of Istmina-Tado, Colombia. Worked in in the Diocese of Arlington VA 1994 until 1997, when removed for sexual misconduct with a young woman. Cristancho arranged in vitro fertilization of a woman in Colombia using his sperm. Triplets were born in 11/2001 (2 boys, 1 girl). He was assigned to the Archdiocese of Baltimore 1999-2002, at St. Ignatius in Forest Hill. The archdiocese revoked Cristancho's faculties in 7/2002, reportedly because he refused a new assignment, later learning that he had fathered triplets. In 2006 DSS found that he had sexually abused of both of the boys, including oral sex. Their mother reported a possible third victim. Maryland appeals court gave custody to the mother in 10/2008. Cristancho denied abuse. Included in 4/2016 on the archdiocese's list of accused. Arrested in 9/2017 and charged with making and possessing child pornography. Detectives found photos of little boys on Cristancho's electronic devices in his home, and on a memory card in a safe. He pleaded guilty 10/4/2021 to "coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity" and admitted to creating nude images of four other children. His victim was ages 11-13 when abused 2002 through at least Fall 2003. Cristancho met the boy at St. Ignatius parish. Sentenced in 5/2011 to 22 years in federal prison. Laicized in 2022. Fr. A. Joseph Maskell
Parish priest; Keough High School chaplain and counselor; police chaplain. Per a 1994 lawsuit, Maskell abused and raped girls at Keough in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Dismissed due to the statute of limitations. Fellow Keough teacher and counselor Fr. Neil Magnus, is also reported to have abused and raped Keough girls, at times with Maskell. Both priests were implicated in the 1969 murder of Sr. Catherine Cesnik. A student said she told Sr. Cathy of abuse by Maskell; Sr. Cathy soon went missing, and was later found murdered. The former student said in 1994 that Maskell drove her to a remote area and showed her the body. The Archdiocese settled with her in 1/2017. Another former student said two police officers sexually abused her while Maskell looked on. He is said to have drugged victims and shown a gun. Some victims said he gave them vaginal exams or enemas, in his office or at a gynecologist's office with other men present. Placed on leave in 1992 after an allegation, sent to treatment; reinstated 1993-1994. Removed again in 1994 after new allegations. Fled to Ireland; worked as a psychologist, including with children. Name included on the Archdiocese's list in 9/2002. By 5/2017 the Archdiocese paid $472K to 16 people with allegations against Maskell. One man said Maskell sexually abused him as an 8th grade altar boy and his mother told the archdiocese in 5/1967; Maskell was then moved to Keough. An Irish accuser surfaced in 5/2017. HSE was investigating in 6/2017. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. It shows the Archdiocese knew of concerns about Maskell's behavior toward children as early as 1966. By 2023, at least 39 people, men and women, had reported they or others were abused as children by Maskell. Most of the reported abuse was by former Keough students. One woman said she was abused as a preschooler. Maskell also was said to have sexually harrassed and assaulted adult women. He died in 2001.

Fr. John Joseph Mike, Jr.
In 1987 the mothers of two teenage boys, who were cousins, reported to the Archdiocese that the boys had recently suffered physical and sexual abuse by Mike. Faculties removed. Criminally charged for whipping a 17-year-old youth, hanging the youth upside down from a basketball backboard and striking him on the buttocks with a table tennis paddle. Mike admitted to Archdiocesan officials and lawyers to abusing the two boys, and to similar abuse of a boy at his previous parish. He said he told later credibly accused priest Joseph Maskell and a doctor, who kept it quiet. Sent to CT for treatment in 5/1987, diagnosed with "sexual sadism." Another parent reported in 6/1987 likely abuse of their son, which the Archdiocese said was not reportable to police. This victim said in 2004 that Mike called him after his arrest and said not to anyone about the abuse because he was already in "big trouble." Pleaded guilty in 9/1987. Sentenced to five years of supervised probation. In 10/1987 allowed parish ministry in CT. The Archdiocese tried to have him assigned in the Diocese of Erie, saying he could return to ministry in Baltimore after three years. The statute of limitations in MD at the time was three years from the age of maturity; Bishop Malooly said "we need to walk on eggshells until the early 1990s." Mike did not end up going to Erie. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report, noting that at least seven victims had come forward, all boys ages 13-17 when abused. Almost all reported that Mike perpetrated sadistic physical abuse against them for his own sexual gratification. Archdiocesan files show concern by officials only for the reputation of the church and Fr. Mike's wellbeing, and no concern about child protection. Mike did not return to active ministry.
