Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick
WDC Cardinal Archbishop 2001-2006, Newark archbishop 1986-2000, Metuchen bishop 1981-1986, NY auxiliary bishop 1977-1981. Retired in 2006. Accused of abuse of numerous seminarians. By 11/2021 there were 14 allegations against McCarrick of child sexual abuse. Per the NY archdiocese 6/20/2018, allegations substantiated of abuse of a boy when a NY priest and Cardinal Cooke’s personal secretary in the 1970s. Suspended. Denied abuse. Three prior allegations of misconduct with adults in Newark and Metuchen; settlements with two. In 7/2018 a man said McCarrick abused him for 20 years, starting age 11 in 1969. He said he told Pope JPII in 1988 during visit arranged by McCarrick; no action. Had the boy and other young men and boys call him “Uncle Ted.” Sued in 8/2019. Resigned from College of Cardinals, Pope accepted 7/28/2018. Ordered to a ‘life of prayer and penance.’ Moved to a friary in Victoria KS, near a school. Vatican ordered a new investigation in 10/2018. A third allegation was investigated in 1/2019. Laicized 2/13/2019. Accused in 10/2019 of abusing at least 7 boys 1970-1990. Named in 12/2019 lawsuits, one claiming abuse of a teen NJ boy in the mid-1990s. A suit in 7/2020 claims abuse in a beach house sex ring. New suits in 8/2020 and 9/2020. Criminally charged 7/28/2021 with sexually assaulting a boy, age 16, in MA in 1974. This accuser, who is the one alleging abuse beginning at age 11 in 1969, said McCarrick was a family friend who often joined the family on trips, and that McCarrick sexually abused him in NJ, NY, CA and MA. Pleaded not guilty at arraignment 9/3/2021. In 1/2023 McCarrick’s legal team said he was not competent to stand trial. Declared incompetent to stand trial and charges dismissed 8/30/2023. Accused in a suit in NY in 8/2021 of sexually abusing a boy, ages 13-16, in 1975-1978. Two news suits in 9/2021, one by a former Newark archdiocesan employee alleging unpermitted sexual contact in 1991, the other by a priest alleging sexual assault, which he reported, and repeated unpermitted sexual contact around 1991 at McCarrick’s NJ beach house. Another 9/2021 suit claims abuse of a young man, late teens-early 20s, in NJ the 1980s. A suit in 11/2021 claims abuse of an altar boy 1982-1986, starting when the boy was age 10, and another by a man alleging abuse when he was a seminarian in 1986 by McCarrick. Criminally charged in WI in 4/2023 with abuse of a an 18-year-old at a lake in 1977. McCarrick would allegedly take the boy to parties where other men also sexually assaulted him. This is the same accuser who alleged abuse beginning at age 11 in 1969 in multiple states, leading also to the charges in MA. Declared incompetent to stand trial and case suspended 1/10/2024. Included on WDC archdiocese’s list of credibly accused.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
