Fr. Carl C. Wernet
In 1992 a woman came forward to allege abuse as a child by Wernet. She said father had confronted Wernet and he admitted the abuse. Diocese denied everything. She tacked up posters and seven other women came forward. The eight women filed suit in 9/2003, alleging abuse 1953-1967. Suit dismissed in 2/1997 on statute of limitations. Twenty-one more accusers, women and men, came forward. Wernet’s personnel file was destroyed when he died in 1980. At least one parent had complained to the Diocese earlier. Included on the Diocese’s list 6/21/2019.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
