Fr. Gerald J. Simonelli
Simonelli’s name appeared on the diocese’s 6/24/2015 list of “Diocesan Priests With A Credible Allegation(s) of Sexual Abuse of Minors Made Against Them While Serving in the Joliet Diocese.” The list notes a continuing canonical process. Simonelli was removed from ministry in 5/2010 after a 21-year-old man accused him of “inappropriate conduct” that occurred more than two years prior. Bishop Sartain stated Simonelli’s removal was due to “homosexual activity” and that he was “unfaithful to his vows on more than one occasion.” As of 12/2018, process still pending and status was “on leave.” Included on the diocese’s list of credibly accused in 2/2021, and shown to have been laicized in 2020.
