Fr. Robert J. Potts
Named publicly in 10/19 by the diocese as accused of sexually abusing a minor in the late 1980s and early 1990s while pastor of St. George’s in Shenandoah. Removed from ministry pending investigation. Per the diocese, the allegation was received 9/24/19. Potts’ accuser reported the allegations to the IRCP (Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program), which notified the diocese. Potts was returned to ministry in 8/20 on recommendation of the diocesan Review Board, after a diocesan investigation determined that Potts “did not commit the acts that were alleged.” .

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
