Fr. James McGreal
Admitted to molesting hundreds of boys. It was revealed in 1988 that McGreal had a history of abuse (known by the Archdiocese) going back 40 years to ordination. Was moved many times and sent for treatment. Supervised for a time by another abuser, Fr. Paul Conn. A 1994 lawsuit settled and sealed. In 5/2002 sixteen new plaintiffs filed four suits. The Archdiocese settled 15 claims in 9/2003 for $7.87M. A final one settled in 4/2004. In 11/2006 three more cases settled for $1.25M. The Vatican decreed permanent suspension in 3/2004. Named in another suit in 7/2008. Died at a “church facility” in MO (likely the Vianney Renewal Center in Dittmer) in 8/2011. Name included on the archdiocese’s list 1/15/2016. Another settlement announced in 11/2018.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
