Fr. John P. Lyons
Placed on leave in 6/2002 after two men filed suits alleging he abused them as altar boys during the 1970s and early 1980s. One man’s mother said she complained at the time to a priest who told Bishop D’Arcy. Arrested in 9/2002 and charged with abuse of a boy, age 8-10, between 1987 and 1989. Acquitted by jury in 2005. No information on resolution of civil suits. Name included on the archdiocese’s list in 8/2011, ‘case in process.’ In 9/2020 the archdiocese announced that Lyons had been “dismissed from the clerical state” by the Vatican. Died in 2020.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
