Br. Mateo Guerrero
One of several religious assigned to Santa Barbara who were named as abusers in a civil suit filed in 8/2008, which alleged that the Franciscans constituted “an ongoing public nuisance as a result of their practice of shuttling pedophile priests among communities without warning members of the public that a sexual predator might be in their midst.” Abuse allegedly took place in the 1970s, 1990s-2000s. (See information in two petitions filed fall 2009.) Included on the Santa Barbara Province Franciscan’s list 5/31/2019, which notes an allegation in 2006, but the “purported victim” was not forthcoming with information despite numerous attempts. Credibility and details “unconfirmed.”

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
