Fr. Mark J. Froehlich
Named a monsignor in 1987, retired on 1/31/2014. Accused in 1/2018 of sexually abusing a girl in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Reportedly in 6/2018, the alleged victim had tried since her teens to report abuse by Froehlich, but was told by priests and others in the diocese that it was her fault. Froehlich denied the allegation. In a letter to parishioners at Mass on 5/27/2018, the Steubenville diocese announced that it had received credible allegations of sexual abuse by Froehlich and had removed him from active ministry. In addition to many parish assignments, he was a teacher and official at Guernsey Catholic Central HS in Cambridge 1972-1977 and a chancery official, including a stint as dean and long tenure as a Tribunal judge. He was also finance officer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Barnesville and prominent in the Rotary Club. On 3/3/2023 the diocese announced that Froehlich’s name was added to its list of accused.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
