Fr. Romano J. Ferraro
Arrested 4/1/2002; convicted and sentenced 5/20/2004 to life in prison for repeatedly raping a boy 1973-1980 in Billerica, MA starting when the boy was age 7. Admitted at trial he was a pedophile who abused perhaps dozens of boys. Earliest abuse alleged in civil suits was 1964-1968. Navy chaplain in FL 1968-1971; dishonorably discharged; sued in 1/2006 for abuse in FL. Reassigned. Allegedly abused in Brooklyn, Rockville Centre, St. Louis, and the Metuchen dioceses. Suspended in 1988. Diocese apparently knew much earlier. Name quietly added among 7 others to the diocesan website in 11/2017 of priests laicized by the Vatican office “authorized to deal with cases involving sexual abuse of minors by a cleric.” Per the Brooklyn diocese’s list in 2/2019, Ferraro was laicized 12/16/2011. Included on the Archdioce of St. Louis list 7/26/2019. A lawsuit in 12/2019 claims abuse of a boy, age 11 or 12 in 1984 or 1985. The plaintiff was an altar boy at a Middlesex, NJ parish. Ferraro is the subject of settlement(s). Accused in a 6/2020. Died 1/21/2023.
