Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio
Named Auxiliary Bishop of Newark in 1996, Bishop of Camden in 1999, and Bishop of Brooklyn in 2003. In 11/19 the Newark archdiocese was notified of an allegation that DiMarzio sexually abused a St. Nicholas in Jersey City altar boy, age 11, in the mid-1970s. His alleged victim also accused Rev. Albert Mark. The man filed suit in 3/21. DiMarzio “emphatically denied” the allegation. In 1/20 the Vatican ordered Cardinal Dolan to investigate. In 3/20 a second man came forward, alleging DiMarzio repeatedly sexually abused him when he was about age six, forty years prior, at Holy Rosary in Jersey City. DiMarzio denied the allegation. This man filed suit in 2/21. On 9/1/21 the Vatican announced that the allegations were without “the semblance of truth.” DiMarzio retired several weeks later, at age 77.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
