Fr. Michael Dermody
From Ireland. Accused of ‘affairs’ with three women he counseled. They won a $1.4 million judgment against him in 1992, but not against the Diocese; another woman won a $3 million judgment against him but not the Diocese. In 1993 the women sued in attempt to recover damages from the Church insurance policy; dismissed by a California Superior Court judge who said that abuse was not covered. Dermody’s name is included on the Diocese’s list 4/30/2019 of those credibly accused of the sexual abuse of minors. It notes a report in 1989 of abuse of a woman, ages 18-25. Faculties withdrawn. Dermody died in Ireland in 2006. Brother of accused priest Michael Dermody.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
