Fr. William J. Cummings
Member of the Singing Priests; died of AIDS in 5/1994. Personnel file released in 1/2003; it contained allegations that Cummings abused a 10-year-old boy in Somerville, MA in 1982. Lawsuits filed in 6/2002 and 8/2002. Both later settled, one in a massive Boston settlement in 2003 and the other in a private settlement in 12/2003. A third suit was pending in 12/2003. The Boston archdiocese’s list in 8/2011 reported that there was no formal determination of guilt because Cummings died prior to a canonical investigation.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
