Fr. Peter Covas
Ordained for the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in CT. Assigned in Detroit MI, Pittsburgh PA, Lake Charles LA, Tucson AZ, and Riverside CA. Incardinated into the San Bernardino diocese in 1981. Resigned in 1983 as the first financial director of the diocese after he loaned $225K of diocesan money to a man who had been convicted of fraud. Arrested twice, in 1987 and 1988, for public sexual misconduct. Covas left his parish in 4/2002 amid allegations of sexual misconduct with minors. Allegations came to light after an internal diocesan review of files. Civil suits were filed in 2003. Covas died 5/9/2004. His personnel file was released 10/25/2010. Included on the San Diego diocese’s list of accused.
