Fr. Joseph Gibbs Clauder
Placed on leave without privileges in 1999 after an allegation of sexual misconduct with an adult woman. She sued the diocese for negligent supervision for not monitoring his conduct after misconduct with another woman. In early 2009, a 20-year-old woman alleged that Clauder sexually abused and threatened her in 2003-04. In 8/10 the diocesan review board found her allegations “credible and probable.” Rome ordered a canonical trial at the conclusion of civil matters. Sentenced to a life of prayer and penance. Acquitted in 12/11 criminal trial.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
