Fr. John P. Carroll
Removed from Boston assignment in 1963 after “true allegation of sexual misconduct with an adult woman.” Sent as extern priest to the Pittsburgh PA diocese and worked in at least six parishes. Returned to Boston in 1972. Accused in 1997 of raping a boy in the early 1960s at St. Michael’s in Elizabeth PA. Carroll denied the allegation, told Cardinal Law. Kept in ministry until December 2003. The Pittsburgh Diocese waited 11 years after learning about allegations before notifying parishioners in 2014. In 9/2015 Carroll remains on administrative leave while steps being taken toward laicization. Living at a private assisted-living facility. In 9/2020 the Boston archdiocesan website shows that the allegation was unsubstantiated, and Carroll’s status was senior priest, ministry restricted. Carroll died 7/8/2021, at age 92.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
