Fr. George C. Berthold
A lawsuit filed in 2000 claimed molestation of a boy in 1972 while Berthold was assigned to St. Joseph’s in Woburn. The Archdiocese said it learned of the allegations in 1999. While dean of St. John’s undergraduate college in Brighton in 1995, Berthold was accused of improper advances towards a freshman seminarian. Cardinal Law dismissed him but then allowed him to teach in NC in 1997. The Archdiocese later withdrew permission and he was fired. Personnel file released in 12/2002. Included in 8/2011 on the Boston archdiocese’s list. On the Charlotte diocese’s list 12/29/2019. Berthold died in 2020, canonical case not completed.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
