Fr. Thomas P. Dunleavy
Per the MI Attorney General’s Report in 10/2022, a woman reported to the diocese in 2002 that Dunleavy sexually assaulted her in the early 1950s, when she was in 6th or 7th grade at St. Joseph’s in Sault Ste. Marie. The woman said she told a nun, who was the school principal, about the sexual assaults. Two other girls her age had also alleged abuse by the priest. The girls were each interviewed by the nun and another priest, and Dunleavy was “suddenly transferred.” In 7/2002 another woman reported to the diocese that she and her sister were sexually abused by Dunleavy in the 1960s at St. Williams in Menominee, at ages 11 and 14. The woman said she told a priest in the 1980s about the abuse who told her to “forget about it.” Further, the priest told her he relayed the allegations to Bishop Schmitt. In 10/2018 and again in 5/2022 a woman reported that when she was in 8th grade in the late 1960s in Menominee, Dunleavy sexually abused her and her sister. She said she reported the abuse in the 1990s to church authorities in Peoria IL.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
