Fr. Cornelius J. Ryan

Worked in Uganda and Kenya 1967-2002, where he was a well-known soccer coach. Returned to Provincial House in South Bend in 2001. Removed without privileges 6/10/2013 from Saint Joseph’s in Hessen Cassel after recent credible allegation that he had sexually abused a boy in Africa about 20 years previously. When confronted by the Diocese, Ryan admitted the allegations were true. Included on the Order’s list 6/12/2019, which notes multiple allegations received in 2013 of sex abuse occurring in the 1980s in Africa. It also said that Ryan was in a long-term treatment facility without access to minors. He died 12/29/2021 at Holy Cross House in Notre Dame, IN.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
