Bishop John R. McGann
Auxiliary Bishop of Rockville Centre 1970-1976. Bishop of Rockville Centre 1976-2000. Died in 2002. In 2/2019 two women publicly alleged that McGann sexually abused them when they were girls in the 1960s and 1970s. One woman said McGann was a monsignor when she was abused by him, Msgr. Edward L. Melton and Rev. Robert L. Brown while all were at St. Agnes in Rockville Centre. The other accuser said Msgrs. McGann, Melton and Mr. John Hanlon, the St. Agnes parish janitor, abused her. Both women said that, when they were 11 in 1967, they were fondled while passed around the laps of priests at a Christmas party in the rectory. In 10/2019 two women and a man filed suit alleging abuse as children by McGann.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
