Per the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General’s Report, the Archdiocese knew of McCaffrey’s abuse of children as early as 1979, yet kept him in ministry, moving him parish to parish. Forced children to drink alcohol and drugged them. Estimated to be hundreds of victims. At least one died by suicide. Noted to be “one of the most well-known and notorious sex abusers in the country.” Removed in 1991 after allegations. Resigned in 12/1993. Convicted on child porn charges in 2002; 20-year sentence. Civil suit filed in 9/2002. Four claims settled in 7/2003. At least one claim in 10/2005 settlement with the Archdiocese. Admitted under oath to abuse of as many as 40 young boys. Included on the Archdiocese’s list in 3/2006. Sued in 5/2006 by for abuse 1982-1986 of boy, ages 8-12. At least one claim included in a 5/2007 $6.65M settlement. Laicized in 7/2010. Personnel file released in 1/2014. Released early from prison on 7/19/2019.
