Deacon Joseph C. Lundowski

Order: SJ
Status: Settled

Diocese: Diocese of Fairbanks AK

Sued in 2004. Accused of the sexual abuse of as many as 59 youths in villages in Alaska, including Hooper Bay, Stebbins and St. Michael, in the 1960s and 1970s. The Jesuits claim he was a volunteer and not a deacon, brother or priest. Claims relating to him were included in a 11/2007 settlement with the Jesuits. Lundowski died in 1996 in Chicago. There were multiple claims in 2008 after the Diocese filed for bankruptcy. In 1/2009 plaintiffs filed 43 civil suits against the Jesuits. Many named Lundowski as abuser.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
