A late priest from Ilion has been added to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany’s List of Credibly Accused after an investigation into allegations that he abused a vulnerable adult.
In a Saturday, June 8 release, the diocese announced that it has concluded an investigation into Rev. J. Gregory Mulhall, and determined that there is reasonable cause to a claim that he sexually abused a vulnerable adult.
The survivor filed an official complaint in 2023, and after the investigation was completed, the Review Board made the recommendation to Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger that there is enough evidence to verify that the allegation is credible. The survivor died before the completion of the investigation.
There have been three other allegations of abuse against a minor or vulnerable adult against Mulhall that have been filed with the Victims Assistance Coordinator, but none of the survivors filed formal complaints or participated in the Review Board process.
There are also four Child Victims Act cases that name Mulhall as the abuser. In 2020, Mulhall was listed in a Child Victims Act complaint filed against the Diocese of Albany, claiming that he abused a minor from 1983 to 1984, during his time in Ilion.
Mulhall died in 2001, at age 90. He was born in Ilion in 1911, but moved to Little Falls with his family in 1916. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1937 and was assigned to St. Peter’s in Stillwater. He served at St. John the Evangelist in Lambertville, New Jersey, from 1937 to 1940, and then at St. Vincent de Paul in Albany from 1940 to 1961.
Mulhall spent the last 24 years of his career at Annunciation Church in Ilion, from 1961 to 1985. He then retired to Our Lady of Hope in Latham, at age 75.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany urges anyone who was sexually abused by a Catholic priest or deacon to report the matter to a law enforcement agency or to the Diocese. To report an incident of abuse or to seek help, contact the Diocese’s Assistance Coordinator Noelle Marie at 518-453-6646 or via email at assistance.coordinator@rcda.org.
