At the age of 90, the religious Fernando Karadima died , expelled from the priesthood after it was proven that he committed sexual crimes .
The death occurred Sunday night at the Hogar San Juan de Dios and, according to his death certificate, he died of bronchopneumonia, kidney failure, diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.
A few weeks ago, Karadima had gone to the emergency room of the Clinical Hospital of the Catholic University, where he could not be admitted immediately due to the high occupancy of beds due to covid-19. At that time he suffered from heart problems .
Flagship case
The story of Karadima was one of the emblematic cases of the Chilean Catholic Church in the matter of sexual abuse, in an edge that ended up hitting even Pope Francis.
Everything came to light in 2010, when Juan Carlos Cruz, James Hamilton and José Andrés Murillo denounced for the first time in the media the harassment suffered at the hands of Karadima in the El Bosque parish in Providencia.
The revelation led to a canonical investigation that found the former guilty . His condemnation was the prohibition of exercising the priesthood and retiring to a life of prayer and penance .
However, the Chilean justice determined that his crimes had prescribed , although the occurrence of these was accredited .
These decisions did not leave the victims happy, who continued to insist on seeking justice and sued the Archdiocese of Santiago to seek civil sanction. Finally, a compensation of $ 441 million was determined that was not appealed by the church .
Francisco’s visit
But the annoyance did not stop there. The Pope Francisco visited Chile in 2018, where he met with strong protests by sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church and the concealment of these.
For example, there is the case of Juan Barros, former bishop of Osorno and who was a disciple of Karadima. His appointment sparked demonstrations in the south of the country as he was accused of covering up and witnessing the crimes .
Barros remained firm in his post, but his presence at the Pope’s acts was the last straw. After a question from Radio Bío Bío , the church leader pointed out that he needed to see evidence to take action on him.
The criticisms of his sayings were such that the Argentine decided to look for such evidence and sent Bishop Charles Scicluna to our country to investigate what was happening in the local church with sexual abuse.
All of this ended with the departure of Barros from his post , but also of other of his colleagues after an unprecedented trip by all the bishops to the Vatican, which culminated in all of them making their positions available.
Ultimately, Francis determined to expel Karadima from the priesthood , increasing the punishment against him.

A los 90 años murió el religioso Fernando Karadima, expulsado del sacerdocio luego que se comprobara que cometió delitos sexuales.
El deceso se produjo la noche del domingo en el Hogar San Juan de Dios y, según consta en su certificado de defunción murió de una bronconeumonia, insuficiencia renal, diabetes melitus e hipertensión arterial.
Hace algunas semanas, Karadima había concurrido hasta la urgencia del Hospital Clínico de la Universidad Católica, donde no pudo ser internado de inmediato ante la alta ocupación de camas por la covid-19. En aquella oportunidad sufría problemas cardíacos.
Caso emblemático
La historia de Karadima fue uno de los casos emblemáticos de la Iglesia Católica chilena en materia de abusos sexuales, en una arista que terminó golpeando hasta el papa Francisco.
Todo salió a la luz pública en 2010, cuando Juan Carlos Cruz, James Hamilton y José Andrés Murillo denunciaron por primera vez en medios de comunicación los vejámenes sufridos a manos de Karadima en la parroquia de El Bosque en Providencia.
La revelación dio pie a una investigación canónica que halló culpable al exprelado. Su condena fue la prohibición de ejercer el sacerdocio y retirarse a una vida de oración y penitencia.
Sin embargo, la justicia chilena determinó que sus delitos habían prescrito, aunque la ocurrencia de estos fue acreditada.
Dichas decisiones no dejaron contentas a las víctimas, quienes siguieron insistiendo en buscar justicia y demandaron al Arzobispado de Santiago para buscar una sanción civil. Finalmente, se determinó una indemnización de $441 millones que no fue apelada por la iglesia.
La visita de Francisco
Pero la molestia no quedó ahí. El papa Francisco visitó Chile en 2018, donde se encontró con fuertes protestas por los abusos sexuales cometidos por miembros de la Iglesia Católica y también por el ocultamiento de estos.
Por ejemplo, está el caso de Juan Barros, otrora obispo de Osorno y que fue discípulo de Karadima. Su nombramiento generó manifestaciones en el sur del país ya que se le sindicaba como encubridor y testigo de los delitos.
Barros se mantuvo firme en su puesto, pero su presencia en los actos del papa fue la gota que colmó el vaso. Tras una pregunta de Radio Bío Bío, el líder de la iglesia señaló que necesitaba ver pruebas para tomar acciones sobre él.
Las críticas a sus dichos fueron tales que el argentino decidió buscar esas pruebas y mandó al obispo Charles Scicluna a nuestro país para indagar qué ocurría en la iglesia local con los abusos sexuales.
Todo esto terminó con la salida de Barros de su cargo, pero también de otros de sus colegas tras un viaje inédito de todos los obispos a Vaticano y que culminó con todos ellos poniendo sus cargos a disposición.
Finalmente, Francisco determinó expulsar a Karadima del sacerdocio, aumentando el castigo en su contra.
