Outside scrutiny could help restore the trust that has been lost in Catholic Church leaders, a member of the Vatican’s child protection body has told an Australian child abuse inquiry.
Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors member Baroness Sheila Hollins said there was a lack of consistency among bishops in their ongoing professional supervision of priests, but oversight into a priest’s personal life would be inappropriate.
The child abuse royal commission will on Wednesday focus on the support and supervision of working priests and religious as it investigates what led to and allowed the continuation of widespread child sex abuse in the Catholic Church in Australia.
Baroness Hollins said the ongoing formation and continuing professional development of ordained people had not yet been accepted as a norm like it had with professions such as medicine and teaching.
