JOHNSTON, Iowa —A woman and her daughter told Johnston police Monday that an imam sexually assaulted them while performing a ceremony at their home.
Police said they received a call about a sexual assault in progress at 10:01 p.m. The caller told police that she had received text messages from a friend claiming that she was at home with her mother, and that both her and her mother were being sexually assaulted by a male priest.
Officers said they found the 42-year-old mother, her 18-year-old daughter and Nermin Spahic, 40, of Des Moines, at the home.
The women told police Spahic was a Muslim imam and that the mother had sought him out in an attempt to provide some assistance and religious guidance to her daughter regarding some personal issues.
