Prosecutor: Alleged abuse of man by priest in 1975 is not factor in attack decades later

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, July 2

SAN JOSE — The trial of a man accused of assaulting a priest he says sexually abused him decades ago is wrapping up, with prosecutors demanding jurors convict William Lynch of felony assault and elder abuse.

Santa Clara County deputy district attorney Vicki Gemetti told jurors Monday that Jerold Lindner’s alleged abuse of Lynch in 1975 doesn’t factor into the assault that took place on May 10, 2010.

She called Lynch a vigilante who meted out his own brand of justice.

Lynch’s attorneys countered in their closing arguments that the alleged molestation is the reason Lynch punched Lindner at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos.

Attorney Paul Mones called the alleged abuse torture and said the effects remain with Lynch.
