St. Cloud / Bishop Removes Priest in Porn Case

St. Paul Pioneer Press (Minnesota)
January 31, 2008

The Catholic bishop of St. Cloud has removed a priest from duty after he was charged with possessing child pornography.

The Rev. John Caskey was charged Wednesday in Stevens County District Court. Authorities say numerous images of child pornography were found on his home computer.

Bishop John Kinney said he immediately removed Caskey from all priestly duties after he learned of the charges.

Caskey had not worked in active ministry since December. He resigned his posts at churches in Morris, Chokio and Herman when Kinney learned Caskey had sent inappropriate letters to someone.

That person, an 18-year-old acquaintance, went to the sheriff when he suspected the letters - which were anonymous - were from Caskey. The sheriff confronted Caskey, who admitted writing the letters. A subsequent search of the priest's home by authorities turned up the child pornography.

Kinney said he has not received any complaints from any of the parishes where Caskey served.
