Priest Abuse Lawsuit Settled for $425,000

Seattle Post-Intelligencer
December 12, 2003

The Archdiocese of Seattle announced yesterday that it has settled a priest abuse lawsuit for $425,000.

The case involves retired priest John Marsh. Three brothers and their mother alleged in a July 2002 complaint that Marsh sexually molested the brothers when they were altar boys at St. Anthony in Renton from the late 1960s to the early '70s.

The suit alleged that Marsh invited the boys to spend the night at the rectory in order to abuse them.

Marsh became prominent in the early 1980s, after writing two books on alcoholism, based on his own experiences. He retired in 1988.

The settlement included counseling for the victims.

Seattle Archbishop Alexander Brunett offered his apologies. "I pray that these settlements will be a positive step toward healing the wounds of victims and restoring their trust," he said.
