Man Arraigned on Mass. Child-Porn Counts By Nicole Gesualdo Providence Journal-Bulletin November 16, 2001 Edward Sadowski, a lay church deacon and former middle school teacher from Coventry, was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court, in Boston, yesterday on child-pornography counts and a charge of attempted statutory rape. Sadowski, 59, of 452 Shady Valley Rd., faces similar child-pornography charges in Rhode Island. Last month, the Rhode Island State Police said they found 14 pornographic photographs of minors on Sadowski's computer. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence has suspended Sadowski as a permanent deacon. Deacons, who usually work part time and are often married, may preside at weddings and funerals, but cannot say Mass or hear confession. The Massachusetts State Police first brought charges against Sadowski in July. An undercover trooper, posing as a 14-year-old girl, arranged to meet Sadowski at a Watertown motel. Sadowski allegedly sent nude photographs of himself and other pornographic pictures to the trooper during a two-week investigation. Sadowski was arrested July 26 at the motel, where he planned to meet the supposed teenager to photograph her nude and have sex with her. The state police charged him with attempted statutory rape, attempted enticement of a minor to pose in a state of nudity, and attempted dissemination of material harmful to a minor. The Massachusetts State Police contacted the Rhode Island State Police on July 25 about their investigation. The Rhode Island State Police executed a search warrant for Sadowski's Coventry home the next day and seized computer equipment. The police said they found 93 pornographic images, 14 of which appeared to feature minors. On Oct. 23, a Massachusetts grand jury indicted Sadowski on one count of attempted statutory rape and five counts related to child pornography, said Julie Ross, an assistant attorney general. At yesterday's arraignment, Superior Court Judge Charles Hely scheduled Sadowski's trial for Feb. 27. |
