Priest Accused of Exposing Himself to Boys

New York Times [Hackensack N.J.]
August 25, 1993

A priest from Troy, N.Y., faces charges that he exposed himself to five young boys on two different occasions in Lyndhurst, prosecutors said today.

The Rev. Peter Walsh, the 42-year-old pastor of St. Anthony's Church in Troy, was arrested Monday afternoon after the second incident, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Fahy.

The Lyndhurst police first received a report of a man parked in front of the Washington School exposing himself in front of four boys, ages 7, 9, 10 and 11, about 3:45 P.M. Sunday.

A 13-year-old boy saw a man fitting the same description parked on a street corner about 3:30 P.M. Monday, again exposing himself, Mr. Fahy said. Father Walsh was arrested about a half-hour later.

He faces four charges of sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual contact. If convicted of all charges, he could be sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Last Friday, a priest in River Edge pleaded not guilty to a charge that he fondled an 18-year-old man after a party in the rectory celebrating the cleric's elevation to monsignor.
