  Priest Convicted

Wisconsin State Journal
April 3, 1993

A priest who heads an independent Catholic church in Mukwonago was convicted of first-degree sexual assault involving a 10-year-old boy who visited his home.

Phillip C. Keyes, 66, of Edgerton, pleaded no contest to the charge at an initial court appearance Thursday in Rock County Circuit Court.

Circuit Judge John Lussow did not immediately schedule a sentencing date.

Keyes is the priest at St. Pius V Church, an independent church with no connection to the Vatican. He served the parish for seven or eight years, said his lawyer, Stephen J. Meyer.

A spokeswoman from the Milwaukee Archdiocese said the independent church was established by the late Rev. Hugh Wish for Catholics who refused to accept changes that modernized church practices.

Keyes left the Madison Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in 1976 because of a dispute over the reforms instituted by Vatican II, Meyer said.
