In recent weeks, officials of the Diocese of Scranton were notified that the Rev. Carlos Urrutigoity is exercising priestly ministry and was recently named the Vicar General of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay.

Urrutigoity served within the territory of the Diocese of Scranton as a member of the Society of St. John from 1998 until 2002, when he was suspended from ministry following accusations of misconduct. The society was suppressed in 2004 by then Bishop Joseph Martino.

Despite Martino’s consistent expression of grave reservations about the cleric’s suitability for priestly ministry, Urrutigoity was incardinated into the Diocese of Ciudad del Este in 2008.

Considering the position of authority that this cleric now maintains and the fact that warnings regarding his suitability for ministry have not been heeded, Scranton Bishop Joseph Bambera encourages anyone who suspected, witnessed or suffered abuse at the hands of Urritugoity or any other cleric to immediately report the crime to local law enforcement.
