Priest Resigns after Accused Leads Trip Boston Herald October 10, 2011 news.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/20111010priest_resigns_after_accused_leads_trip/ BILLERICA — A Massachusetts Roman Catholic priest has resigned from the parish he led for nearly two decades because he allowed a volunteer facing sexual abuse allegations to chaperone a group of teenagers. The Archdiocese of Boston said in a statement Sunday that the Rev. Eugene Tully will be reassigned after leading St. Theresa de Lisieux in Billerica since 1992. The archdiocese said Tully allowed a congregant and former priest to chaperone the youth trip last year. Church officials said Tully showed a "serious error in judgment" because he knew the man faced abuse allegations. The man was not named in the statement. Parishioners say he faces abuse allegations in Maine dating to the 1970s. The archdiocese stressed the man has no criminal record and has never been accused of abusing anyone in Billerica. |
