The past few days have been difficult ones as I have worked through an issue that no pastor wishes to face. We have had to place a minister on a paid leave of absence due to a past moral failure. I learned about this in June from the minister involved and believed the issue was settled. Two weeks ago I was surprised to find out that the issue was not settled. Some people have questioned why I waited for several months. It's simply this: I acted out of a heartfelt concern and compassion for this minister because the event occurred many years ago, he was receiving professional counseling; and I was concerned about confidentiality.

In light of the events that have unfolded, I realize now that I should have discussed it further with this minister and brought it to the attention of our church leadership immediately.

I want you to know that the protection of our church members is paramount. Consequently, I have directed the Personnel Committee to conduct a thorough investigation of this situation, and to work with the staff, legal counsel, and a human resources consultant to create policies and procedures that conform to the highest of biblical standards for our staff.

We will issue a statement when the investigation is complete.

This minister will continue to be supported through outside Christian counseling and our Biblical Guidance Ministry. However, he will have no church responsibilities and will not be on campus during the investigation.

In closing, I want you to know that I still have a Pastor's heart for everyone involved in this situation. I am saddened and dismayed to see this minister's family and our own church family go through this heartbreaking situation. God wants us to respond in grace and love. Jesus forgave others and we can, too.

In the days ahead, I ask that everyone pray for the family, the staff, and our fellow church members. Remember that the Lord is faithful and he is in control.
