(Colorado Springs, Colorado) The Colorado Family Action Council - the organization behind a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would outlaw same-sex marriage - has been found to be a front for Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs group that fights LGBT issues across the country.

Since its founding this year the Colorado Family Action Council has had one contributor - FOF - to the tune of a half million dollars, according to documents obtained under freedom of information laws by the Rocky Mountain News.

In June the Council spent nearly half that amount on television commercials denouncing same-sex marriage and promoting an amendment to prevent gays from marrying. The commercials, which ran in the Denver area also called on voters to reject another proposed amendment that would permit civil unions in the state.

The two amendments are among four making their way toward voters in November.

Only one of the proposed amendments is assured a place on the ballot. The proposal to create a domestic partner registry and provide some benefits was approved by the legislature and therefore does not need a signature drive.

The Council says the measure is same-sex marriage "in disguise". It supports a third proposed amendment - that would negate the partner registry and bar the state from giving any legal recognition to same-sex couples.

The fourth proposed amendment would void the third amendment.

The battling amendments have left voters confused and it is likely whatever the outcome in November the courts may have to sort out which won approval and what impact, if any, multiple winning amendments have on each other.

Documents obtained by the Rocky Mountain News show that the Council's registered agent is former Colorado U.S. Attorney Michael Norton.

Two weeks ago hundreds of gays, lesbians and their supporters ringed the Colorado Springs headquarters Focus on the Family. It was the end of a five day march organized by the nondenominational group Soulforce that began in front of the state Capitol in Denver.

At the kickoff rally New York University professor Dr. Judith Stacey accused FOF of twisting research on gays "to prop up unscientific claims".
