The man under fire since a Channel 9 I-Team report two weeks ago is resigning his position at the Archdiocese at Cincinnati.

Vince Frasher is the longtime personnel director at the Archdiocese. He's responsible for hiring and firing everyone who's not a priest, including all the teachers at Catholic schools.

The I-Team investigation found Frasher knowingly hired a criminal to do criminal background checks on Catholic volunteers.

Frasher hired Alex Henties to do the background checks, giving him access to the social security numbers of thousands of Catholics.

Henties is now serving two years in prison for a police chase and cocaine conviction.

The I-Team showed you how Henties had a long criminal record before Frasher hired him in the summer of 2003.

9News also told you why Frasher hired Henties. They've had a personal relationship for more than 20 years.

Henties has told several people that Frasher sexually abused him when he was a young next door neighbor to Vince Frasher in the Forest Glen subdivison in Montgomery.

The Archdiocese claims to have a signed letter from Henties denying Frasher abused him.

Today, Vince Frasher resigned with a letter to Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, saying:

"Recent events have occurred that indicate decisions and judgments I have made over the course of the past several years may have resulted in difficulties for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. I believe it is in the best interest of all concerned that I resign my position immediately, effective today."

The investigation is ongoing. The I-Team has learned investigators now have Frasher's computer and they're looking for evidence of crimes.

Meanwhile the Archdiocese says it hopes to hire a consultant soon to evaluate its background check program.

People are still worried about identity theft since a criminal had access to every volunteer's social security number.

Archdiocese press release

The following is the press release emailed to 9News Tuesday afternoon from Dan Andriacco of the Archdiocese.

May 30, 2006

Vince Frasher today resigned as director of the Office of Personnel for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

"Recent events have occurred that indicate decisions and judgments I have made over the course of the past several years may have resulted in difficulties for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati," he wrote to Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk.

"I believe it is in the best interest of all concerned that I resign my position immediately, effective today."

Frasher has been on administrative leave since May 18. A private investigator retained by the Archdiocese is investigating allegations of fired employee Alex Henties (broadcast by a Cincinnati TV station) that he and Frasher had a sexual relationship that began when Henties was young. Frasher denies the allegations.

The investigation has not been concluded and has not been discontinued. Archbishop Pilarczyk has pledged complete cooperation with secular authorities in any investigation they may undertake.

Henties had criminal convictions both before and after he was hired by the Archdiocese to train and support parishes in fingerprinting volunteers and employees who work with children. The Archdiocese has identified and soon hopes to hire a consultant to evaluate its background check program. There have been no reports of identity theft related to the program.
