Former Massachusetts Priest Indicted on Charge of Raping a Girl The Associated Press, carried in Herald-Tribune April 18, 2006 http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? AID=/20060418/APN/604180716 CANTON, Mass. -- A former Massachusetts priest who now lives in the Florida Panhandle has been indicted on charges that he raped a girl in the late 1960s. The Reverend Gerard McMahon was indicted on one count of rape of a child and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14. The woman came forward with the allegations several months ago. Authorities were able to move forward with the indictments because the statute of limitations at the time of the alleged crimes is suspended when defendants move out of state. The 70-year-old McMahon is now retired, living in Pensacola. His lawyer says McMahon "is not a predator." He has never been assigned to any official position in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee. There is no indication there are any other potential victims. An arraignment date has not been scheduled. |
