Harney, Peter P. News Journal (Wilmington, DE) April 18, 2000 Father Peter P. Harney Died on Sunday April 16, 2000 at the age of 76 at Manor Care Health Care Facility, Limestone Road. Father Harney was born on September 20, 1923 in Bally-Duff, Kilmeaden County, Waterford, Ireland where he attended Bally-Duff National School, St. Augustine's College and Mt. Mellary College in Waterford County. He attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD. Father Harney was ordained on June 14, 1953 in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford by the Most Reverend Daniel Cohalan, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. Father Harney served as associate pastor at St. Teresa's, Port Deposit, MD from July 10, 1953-June 1956, Christ Our King, Wilmington until August 22, 1958, St. Matthew's, Woodcrest November 28, 1958-December 1, 1960, Corpus Christi, Elsmere until February 4, 1961 and St. Thomas, Wilmington until May 29, 1964. During this time Father Harney served as administrator at Christ Our King from March-October 1958 and administrator of St. Matthew's from August 17, 1960-February 4, 1961. Father was appointed pastor of St. Benedict's, Ridgely, MD September 6, 1968 where he served until he retired as pastor on December 4, 1974. Father Harney lived at St. Joseph on the Brandywine until 1990 and lived in Lewes, DE until 1995. Father is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Peg Harney of Lewes, DE and his sister, Eileen Leonard of Falls Church, VA. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Ave. and Union St., Wilmington. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at St. Ann's from 4-8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery.
