Fr. James Mitchell

Ordained: 1973
Status: Sued

Diocese: Archdiocese of Seattle WA

Ordained in Colombia. Brought two impoverished teen boys from Colombia to live with him at St. John’s in Seattle where he worked 1985-1986. Promised them US citizenship via adoption, then allegedly sexually abused them for years. One of them filed a civil suit in 2004. The Archdiocese knew of Mitchell’s history in 1986 or 1987 but did nothing legally because the abuse was thought to have occurred only in Colombia. Sent for treatment, then removed from archdiocesan assignments. A second suit was filed in 2005. Name included on archdiocese’s list 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious with admitted, established or credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of a minor.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
