Rev. Msgr. Basil A. Ormsby, 84, was the son of John and Johanna Ahern Ormsby. He attended Our Lady of the Angels Seminary, Niagara University and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo, New York on May 30, 1942. After assignment to the Missionary Apostolate, he was assistant pastor at Holy Trinity Parish, Dunkirk; St. Teresa, Niagara Falls; Our Lady of the Rosary, Niagara Falls; and other parishes in Buffalo and Cheektowaga.

Msgr. Ormsby was assigned to St. Teresa Parish in South Buffalo in 1957 and served for many years as assistant pastor and later, in 1969, he became pastor there. He retired in 1987.

Throughout his priesthood, Msgr. Ormsby maintained a strong association with Niagara University, which recognized him on several occasions for his generosity to people and institutions, for his support of the education of young people, and for his assistance in fund raising. He received both the Niagara University honorary degree of doctor of divinity and the president's medal. He was also an affiliate of the Vincentian Community, the order of priests who sponsor Niagara University.

Msgr. Ormsby was also on the board of Trustees of Canisius College, Buffalo, which granted him an honorary degree in 1987. In 1982, the Buffalo News named him one of its 10 outstanding Citizens.

Msgr. Ormsby also served as president of the St. Patrick's Scholarship Fund, which sends students to study in Ireland. He was also a benefactor of St. Francis High School, Athol Springs and Stella Niagara education park in Lewiston.

His brother J Stanly Ormsby was also a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo.
