Two Priests Mark 50th Anniversaries Retired Monsignor Collapses on Way to Celebrating Jubilee Mass

Buffalo News
June 6, 1992

Monsignor Basil A. Ormsby and the Rev. John J. O'Connor, priests in the Buffalo Catholic Diocese, have marked the 50th anniversaries of their ordination.

Monsignor Ormsby, retired pastor of St. Teresa's Parish, Buffalo, was to have observed his golden anniversary by celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving last Saturday in Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, Orchard Park. However, he collapsed while leading a procession into the church and was rushed to Mercy Hospital where he was reported to be resting comfortably Friday night.

Meanwhile, Bishop Edward D. Head, who had been scheduled to concelebrate the Mass with Monsignor Ormsby, became principal celebrant and offered the Mass.

Monsignor Ormsby served for 30 years as pastor of St. Teresa's before his retirement in 1987. He was formerly assistant pastor of St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus and Our Lady of the Rosary parishes, both in Niagara Falls.

Father O'Connor, chaplain at Buffalo Psychiatric Center, celebrated his anniversary Sunday in Queen of Martyrs Church, Cheektowaga, where he also serves as a weekend assistant. He has been chaplain at the psychiatric center since 1954 and assistant at Queen of Martyrs for 15 years. He formerly served as St. John de LaSalle and Sacred Heart parishes, Niagara Falls, and Annunciation, Buffalo.
