  Priest Charged with Sex Assault

Wisconsin State Journal
January 8, 1993

A Catholic priest who was removed from his parish in October has been charged with sexually assaulting a teen-age boy in the youngster's town of Sheboygan home.

Rev. William J. Effinger, 60, was named in a criminal complaint filed late Wednesday in Sheboygan County Circuit Court by Ozaukee County District Attorney Sandy Williams. She has been named as a special prosecutor in the case.

Effinger was accused of fondling the youth's genitals and performing oral sex on the then-eighth-grader during the winter of 1987-88.

He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on the felony charge of second-degree sexual assault Jan. 19. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $ 10,000 fine.

Effinger was removed in late October from his post as pastor at Holy Name church after admitting to a Milwaukee television station that he molested a young boy more than 20 years ago in Kenosha.
