The former Richmond mega church pastor, Geronimo Aguilar, is on trial in Texas, accused of sexually assaulting two girls in the ’90s.
On the stand today, a very calm and relaxed Geronimo Aguilar, who often looked directly at the jury when he spoke, testified that he had a lot of extra marital affairs but he never did anything inappropriate with a minor.
Just moments before taking the stand, the former ROC pastor appeared to be deep in thought, prepping for his critical testimony.
Once he was sworn in under oath, Aguilar told the jury there was no truth to the allegations of an inappropriate with relationship with two girls.
“No sir, never ever in my life and never ever even accused of having sex with a child in my until this,” he testified.
The former Richmond pastor claims that as the ROC Church soared, becoming one of the biggest churches in the nation, he lost his way. During this period, he slept with several roc parishioners.
When asked how losing direction made him feel, Aguilar got emotional.
“Like a failure in every way possible,” he said. “Yeah, it’s difficult.”
Aguilar spent more than four hours on the stand Tuesday.
At one point, Aguilar told the jury those claims he played strip poker with the girls are a lie.
“If they are saying that happened, yes they are,” he said. “I don’t even know how to play strip poker.”
During cross examination, prosecutors fired back asking why these women would lie. They told Aguilar the alleged victims can longer file a civil suit seeking money in the matter, the statute of limitations has run out.
“To be honest with you, I don’t why she would do this,” he said. “I have known this family for a long time, desperate people do desperate things. I know all a long they thought I had money.”
Prosecutors then began to hammer Aguilar asking if he ever sent inappropriate text messages to minor at the ROC Church.
“I don’t believe I texted her anything in appropriate sexually,” he said.
As they read off messages about going away, missing each other and needing love, Aguilar repeatedly said he didn’t remember or didn’t recall it.
“I don’t remember what we text, but can guarantee she started texting me inappropriate things,” he explained.
Aguilar also addressed a child protective services investigation in Texas in the late ‘90s.
“They called the family in, interviewed them, interviewed me in after interviewed me separately,” he explained.
Aguilar testified nothing happened, law enforcement was never called.
Those Child Protective Service records no longer exist — they were expunged after a certain period of time. Prosecutors will still get a chance to cross examine the witness.
