Priest accused of raping woman during 'exorcism'

BHOPAL, INDIA - A temple priest is accused of sexually assaulting a woman he was supposed to perform an exorcism on.

Nishatpura police said Santosh Kumar Kaushik told the 34-year-old woman that she was possessed by an evil spirit and needed to have an exorcism.

On February 6, he allegedly went to her home and told her husband to leave while the ritual was performed.

The woman said she became unconscious during the exorcism and when she regained consciousness, she was naked and felt pain in her private part.

She told authorities that Kaushik threatened her not to tell anyone about what happened.

The woman told her husband, then lodged a complaint against Kaushik.

The case is under investigation.
